Advice from the Center for Academic Success Class of
2004
“Wake up everyday and go to class! When you start
to miss class, you fall behind quickly. Also, after each class spend at
least 5 minutes reviewing your notes so they can get stuck in your
head.”
“Don’t party every night. If you can limit
yourself to just Friday and Saturday you will be in good shape. Too
much partying will be your quickest way out of the university.”
“My advice would have to be to go to all classes,
take good notes, study for tests, ask for help if you need it, do all
homework, talk to your teachers about class work and grades etc.
Interact with different people and get involved with different
activities on campus.”
“The advice I would give the freshmen of 2005, is
to manage your time effectively. Everything is time consuming, so make
sure you prioritize. Time is important, so manage it wisely.”
“Get involved! But make sure you can manage what
‘you want to do’ with what ‘you have to do’. If you can successfully do
that, your time in college will be less stressful.”
“Try to do all your homework the day you get it
because no one likes to be stuck inside on the weekends.”
“Don’t take for granted your absences will be
forgiven; usually they will count against your overall grade”.
“Study hard and don’t slack off. Don’t wait until
the last minute to get your work done. Start early on all assignments.”
“Don’t think college is a hangout spot because it’s
not. Stay focused and prepared.”
“Get used to having homework and paying attention
in English class because it will benefit you down the line.”
“Get ready because college is no joke.”
“You will not have your mother and father here to
do for you; you will have to do for yourself. So don’t get off task
and don’t get drawn into the party scene.
“Don’t skip any classes and go to all your required
academic coaching and/or mentoring sessions.”
“Attend all your classes. Don’t let the partying
get the best of you, you are paying thousands of dollars for education;
why waste that kind of money.”
“Missing one assignment can affect your whole grade
point average.”
“College is not that difficult as long as you are
motivated to succeed and you have good time management skills. You need
to think you have your whole life to party, take advantage of the
education that is provided to you first.”
“Do not procrastinate and try to turn in your
assignments on time.”
“Keep a positive attitude and don’t stress yourself
out.”
“Only make friends with positive people; negative
people will bring you down.”
“If you are unsure about your assignments, make
sure you talk to your instructors.”
“Go to all your classes even if you feel tired or
maybe a little bit sick. If you can find a way to make it to all your
classes, you will succeed.”
“Try not to get caught up in going to the parties
every weekend because that can make your grades go down. You can try to
balance, but you have to know school comes first.”
“Stay focused.”
“In order to succeed, you must be determined.”
“Don’t wait until the last minute to study or
complete assignments. Also, stay focused and try not to get distracted
easily.”
“Don’t come to college to play. Get your work done
correctly and accurately.”
“Being away from home can be lonely and
overwhelming; so, don’t forget to talk to someone either here at school
or at home. You don’t have to feel alone.”
“If you like to party, make sure you do your
homework first.”
“Complete and turn in all your homework on time;
don’t procrastinate. Also, study ahead of time for the tests and exams;
don’t cram!”
