Program Requirements

The Center for Academic Success program serves students for their first two consecutive semesters at SIUC.  During this time, students are expected to demonstrate a “good faith effort” with respect to academic progress and to assume responsibility for their education.  “Good faith effort” is demonstrated by regularly attending each scheduled class meeting, actively participating in programs and activities sponsored by the Center for Academic Success, cooperating with staff, actively participating in self-help workshops/activities, and making a sincere effort to succeed.

All students are required and/or expected to:

  1. Attend all scheduled classes and associated learning opportunities.
  2. Cooperate with CAS program staff.
  3. Meet at least once each semester and as needed with academic advisors.
  4. Keep CAS staff informed of problems, concerns, or situations adversely affecting academic progress.
  5. Adhere to all CAS and University policies and procedures.
  6. Attend and be prompt for all required meetings and appointments with CAS staff.
  7. Participate freely in services offered by CAS (Academic Coaching  and Peer Mentoring) and other University departments.
  8. Seek and request help when needed.
  9. Utilize academic coaching and other services offered by CAS staff when assigned.
  10. Attend academic coaching, which is required, for a minimum of six (6) times during each semester.
  11. Meet with peer mentor if assigned.
  12. Successfully complete University 100, English 101, Speech 101, and CI 212 before transferring to another academic unit.

Requirements by semester:

Fall Semester*  (First semester)

Required For All Students:

  1. Meet with a Developmental Skills Training Specialist to schedule Fall courses.
  2. Enroll in University 100.
  3. Attend all scheduled class meetings of University 100.
  4. Participate in at least 6 academic coaching sessions prior to finals week (week 16).
  5. Participate freely in workshops sponsored by the CAS program.
  6. Meet regularly with a peer mentor (if assigned).
  7. Meet with assigned Developmental Skills Training Specialists to schedule upcoming Spring classes by December.
  8. Successfully complete ENGL 100/101 and UNIV 100 with a grade of A, B or C.

Recommended For All Students:

  1. Seek academic coaching (tutorial assistance) more than the required 6 sessions.
  2. Attend study sessions at least once a week and at least 1 week prior to final exams.
  3. Ask for and accept help when needed.

Spring Semester (Second Semester)

  Required For All Students:

  1. Meet with a Developmental Skills Training Specialist to schedule courses for the Summer session (if applicable) and upcoming Fall by May.
  2. Participate in at least 6 academic coaching sessions prior to final’s week (week 16).
  3. Participate freely in workshops sponsored by the CAS program.
  4. Meet regularly with a peer mentor (if assigned).
  5. Successfully complete ENGL 100/101 with a grade of A, B or C.

Recommended For All Students:

  1. Seek academic coaching (tutorial assistance) more than the required 6 sessions.
  2. Attend study sessions for mid-term and final exams.
  3. Accept help when needed.
